Sweet Valley High (The Book Series): Season 1 – It’s A Sweet Valley World After All (Part 2)

The time has come to wrap up the first season of Sweet Valley High (the books, not the TV show) as I see them. If you haven’t already, check out Sweet Valley High (The Book Series): Season 1 – The Skinny And The Perfect Size 6 (Part 1) for ‘The Skinny’ of the season and the first twelve episode (book) recaps.  The last nine episode recaps are below followed by a special section full of insights, trivia and funny tidbits about the book series. If you have read my previous Confessions Of A Bookaholic: Sweet Valley High Editions then the recaps may be nothing new, except serve as a convenient cheat sheet in the future. The last section, however, is completely new information such as Jessica’s secret obsession, what the weather in Sweet Valley tells us, why only one of the twins is put in physical danger and the psychological states of each twin if they were real people. Enjoy! 🙂

Sweet Valley High (The Book Series): Season 1 – The Skinny And The Perfect Size 6 (Part 1)

I know that I often refer to Sweet Valley High (the book series, not the TV show) as the most melodramatic soap opera of its time. I still believe that statement, 100%. So, I wanted to look back at the last 21 books since many hour-long TV dramas have 20-24 episodes in a season and relay it in terms of the barebones ridiculousness that would make a complete TV season.

First you will find ‘The Skinny’ which is simply the highlights of what happened, in order, during the course of what I am deeming Sweet Valley High: The Book Series Season 1. ‘The Skinny’ only cares about the most important events that have happened so far. The second section is called the ‘Perfect Size 6’ because those are the sizes of the Wakefield twins – a fact that is pointed out in the first few pages of every book. Every. Single. One. Like ‘The Skinny’ this is only concerned with what happened: the who, what, when, where and how and if it is relevant sometimes the why. If ‘The Skinny’ was the highlights think of this section as short episode (book) recaps of no more than a few sentences each. It’s a great refresher or way to catch-up with everything that has happened that may come up later. For actual commentary on the books themselves please visit the Confessions Of A Bookaholic: Guilty Pleasure Sweet Valley High editions.

And Then I Had A Collection: How One Inspired Short Story Gave Birth To A Collection Of Stories

Less than two weeks ago inspiration hit me HARD. For the first time in over four years I was writing fiction. The characters came at me before I could get every aspect of their personalities down (thank goodness for my memory!) while lines of dialogue flooded my brain and snippets of various scenes presented themselves, loudly. I was happy with this and thought, “All right, here we go.” Fiction used to be my go-to after all, the kind of writing I enjoyed reading the most (escaping in is more like it) and writing. Even if I was writing something ‘real’ I could dress it up as fiction by changing details, events and the players yet keep its core truth (and I did this probably more than I did straight up inspired fiction). The story that came at me twelve days ago was an example of something that really happened, but I put a fictive twist on it and the characters really are different from their ‘real counterparts’.

Then one week later (seriously, there must be something in the air on Thursdays) I was hit for the second time, even harder than before, with a second story – this one was straight up inspired fiction. And by inspired I mean that I wrote between one third and one half of it, in a single sitting. 4,200+ words later, I realized that these two stories could be related by different takes on the same word or idea. Before I knew it I was connecting the characters in ways I do not plan to hide, but also in ways that are not all that obvious. Soon after this I had outlined (in my mind) two other stories and ways to again connect each character or character cluster to each other by way of their relationships, not by a place, group or more abstract concept.

Confessions Of A Bookaholic: Guilty Pleasure Edition #9 – Sweet Valley High Books 19-21

As always, there are spoilers ahead – that is all I need to say. While this list isn’t the most consistent in terms of awesomeness (two hits and a miss) the hits are among the best Sweet Valley has to offer (so far) – definitely worth a read. 😉

“Showdown”

Sweet Valley Scale: 4.5 out of 5 Twins
Pick Of The Bunch Rating: Second Place

Jessica wastes no time making sure he notices her – so what if he is Lila’s boyfriend. Unknown to Lila, Jack dates Jessica during the week and Lila on the weekends. The sight of Lila’s happy face come Monday mornings, however, is more than Jessica can stand. Elizabeth, Jessica’s twin sister, warns Jessica to forget Jack before she really gets hurt, but Jessica would rather get Lila out of the picture. Then she can have Jack all to herself…

Confessions Of A Bookaholic: Guilty Pleasure Edition #8 – Fear Street Books 19-23

This list of Fear Street titles if very special for a few reasons. First of all, this list marks the end of what I deem as old school Fear Street’. They just get better after this (not saying it wasn’t already great before, mind you). The second reason is that this list also includes the Fear Street’s first trilogy (there are six trilogies in the original series). This brings up my next point though. This week’s list has spoilers. Whenever R.L. Stine writes a trilogy in this series, each book builds off its predecessor – it is a true trilogy. So, books two and three in the trilogy will give away previous key plot points, including who the killer is. So, please skip the trilogy if you plan to read these books because it will ruin the suspense for you. To help out with this, I have placed the trilogy as the last three books on this list, when they should actually be books 2-4. The first book in the trilogy will not give anything away; it is the last two books that will (even in their summaries).

“Goodnight Kiss” (Super Chiller)

Fear Street Scale: 4 out of 5 Fears
Pick Of The Bunch Rating: Fourth Place

Matt, his girlfriend April, and best friend Todd are excited for a summer of sun and fun at the beach. But as dark shadows flutter over the sand, they find themselves plunged into a terrifying world of endless night. Matt wonders what is happening to Todd and April – they seem so tired, so pale, so changed. Twin puncture marks on their throats give Matt a clue and the bats hovering over the beach offer another. Soon it becomes clear that April and Todd have been lured away by strange and intoxicating kisses. Kisses that leave them weak and hungry for more; the kisses of a vampire.
