Confessions Of A Bookaholic – Guilty Pleasures Edition #63 – Sweet Valley High #59 – In Love Again

The first book after Todd and Elizabeth get back together and it’s already drama, drama, drama. I hate to say I told you so, Elizabeth – wait, no I really don’t. I told you so! Anyway, check out a book that only proves my point – Elizabeth Wakefield and Jeffrey French were a much better couple than Elizabeth Wakefield and Todd “I’m a Scrub” Wilkins. 😛

Sweet Valley Scale: 3.5 out of 5 Twins

Elizabeth Wakefield and Todd Wilkins are back together! After living in Vermont for several months, Todd Wilkins and his family have returned to Sweet Valley. It’s just like old times between Elizabeth and Todd now – in fact it’s even better. They have never been so much in love. But before long Elizabeth notices that Todd is different, he isn’t the same person he was when they first started dating. For one thing, his family has a lot more money. Todd lives in a mansion, attends an exclusive private school and drives an expensive car. And he has a whole new set of friends, and some of them don’t like Elizabeth. Can Todd and Elizabeth’s love survive all of the changes in Todd’s life?

My First Blogiversary

It’s hard to believe, but today marks one year since I first started this blog. One year to the day. I was really hesitant about starting a blog, and I had no idea if it was something that I would stick with, or what it would turn into.

Looking back, I think I did okay. In the first year there were a total of 209 posts (this post if #210). When I started the blog the first week I wanted to write as much as possible, like almost every day. But I quickly realized that A) I can’t blog THAT much and have a life, B) I can’t think of that many things to write about that are “post-worthy” and C) If people started following me via email and I posted that much I would probably be considered spam. So, I didn’t. But I did want to challenge myself to produce quality writing on almost a daily basis, and to put it out there, partly as a way to get used to the idea of submitting my work and eventually getting published. So at some point after one or two months, it wasn’t that long I think, I decided on four posts per week. Sometimes with holidays I have missed a post, and other times with a single topic spread out over five posts, some weeks had a little extra. But it all averaged out, so I was posting a little more than every other day.

The Whole Religion Thing: A Recovering Catholic’s (Surprising?) Thoughts

I am not a religious person. I kind of feel like when I make this declaration I should brace myself for the backlash, as I get into a defensive stance. I think if someone says something along the lines of, “I am not religious,” or “I don’t believe in God,” or “I don’t like church,” there are instant judgments made about that person. It’s like a reflex. For me I may not know exactly what I believe in, but I know that I believe in something.

I was raised Catholic, and I think this rigid upbringing of “not having a choice” and being forced to participate in something I found inherently wrong, as contributing to my aversion of church, religion and all things God-related. Back then, I definitely believed in God, but I did not believe in the church. I prayed at night, not because it was encouraged because I never prayed the way I was “supposed to pray.” At night I would just have a conversation with God. I would tell him about my day, thank him when it moved me to, and ask for something if I was anxious. I didn’t ask for toys or books or material things, it was usually about how to handle something or asking for something not to be as bad as I thought it would be. (And occasionally I asked for someone to like me, not in a romantic way, but because it was someone I admired or looked up to.) It was informal and I didn’t go through all of the prayers that were drilled into my head. I never uttered them unless I was at CCD and had to (religious education for young Catholics).

Sweet Valley Scale: 4 out of 5 Twins

When Todd Wilkins moved to Vermont with his family, Elizabeth Wakefield’s heart was broken. She thought that she would never get over losing him. Then Todd writes to Elizabeth and tells her that he is moving back to Sweet Valley. And not only that, but that he still cares for her. Sweet Valley High Presents – When Your Heart Belongs To Two Boys: Todd Versus Jeffrey

Love is far from rational. In fact, the heart wants what it wants, and often what it wants doesn’t make a lick of sense. I hope that isn’t the case with one of Sweet Valley’s favorite twins, Elizabeth Wakefield. You see there was Elizabeth’s first love, Todd Wilkins… They were so in love, and so annoying, until he moved across the country, thus ending their relationship. And Elizabeth was single for awhile (10 books) before falling in love with someone else: Jeffrey French. Their relationship proved to be healthier, stronger and better than her relationship with Todd, and Elizabeth did love him, but now Todd has moved back to Sweet Valley and she has to make a choice between the only two boys she has ever loved.

So I want to take this opportunity to sum up each of Elizabeth’s suitors and her relationship with each boy to see definitively who Elizabeth should end up with. And if she doesn’t make the right choice, just how irritated we should be. 😛

Todd 2    Todd Wilkins

Pros: Basketball star, first love, recently rich

Cons: Tendency to be irrational and get jealous for no reason, never believes in what Elizabeth thinks when it involves another pretty girl, plays to double-standards almost all of the time, always talks badly about Elizabeth’s twin sister, and let’s not forget the near-fatal motorcycle accident
