My Surprise Mother’s Day

I am all about family traditions, even though right now this family consists of only two people: me and my husband, Roy. I have done Easter egg hunts and hidden baskets, I have left stuffed animals for my husband on Christmas morning, and I leave May Day baskets for neighbors and friends. Maybe it seems corny or sentimental or childish, but something about doing these things now, before we have kids, helps keep the hope alive that one day we actually will have kids.

Since I’m not a mother, I haven’t ever had a Mother’s Day. I mean why would I? And since my own birth mother is criminally insane, I don’t really celebrate Mother’s Day. It used to be a hard day for me to get through, knowing I would never have a mother, and now it’s just a day, like any other. So it was a big surprise when my husband told me to go sit down and close my eyes, on Sunday morning. I figured Roy got candy or some other sweet treat at the store the previous night. It’s always a nice surprise, but I wasn’t expecting anything more than that. And certainly not what I actually got.

To Report Or Not Report… That Is The Question

I have been battling with a question for the past year. Not for a year, because I would have gone crazy if it had been continuous, but on and off. It has to do with a dentist and whether or not to report him to the State Board of Dentistry. I wrestle with this and whenever I think about it, I think, “Something should be done,” but I also don’t want to get an emerging dentist into serious trouble or damage his reputation. And I certainly, don’t get (and don’t want) anything out of it – he’s not my dentist anymore. The reason I consider this, and why it still bothers me is because I’m afraid he’ll keep being reckless and do what he did to me, with someone else. And it won’t work out so well for him or his patient.

So, what did this guy do that was so bad? For most people, he probably would just be considered a rip off. He tried to convince all of his patients that they needed to replace every filling they ever had before they came to him, and that they needed a bunch of nonessential, but valid services like a deep root cleaning, which helps fight gum disease and is necessary for people with certain gum inflammation. But he recommended this to anyone who walked in his door. I mean I felt leery from the get-go, but I kept him as my dentist for a year, before I finally had to face facts. This guy was only thinking of the bottom line, and that’s fine, it’s a business, but it becomes not so fine, when it is at the expense of his patients.

Have A Happy May Day: Someone Tried To Out-Sneak Me!

May Day is a thing with me. I mean it might be corny, but I love leaving baskets of goodies for neighbors and friends on the first day of the month. I used to do this when I was younger, though it was less of a basket and more like a candy bar or something like that. I would ring the bell and run and hide behind a tree. But back then I would keep doing it and hiding until I was eventually discovered. I’m not sure why I did that back then, I don’t think it was for the credit, more like tag and hide and seek. I mean I left things for my friends, my own age.

As an adult, you’d think I’d be over such things. I mean my husband and I don’t have kids, so what’s my excuse to be all… kid-like? I don’t really have one, except that I like it. We don’t usually get birthday or Christmas gifts for most of our friends, or any of our neighbors, so this is a way to give them something and say, “Hey, guess what? We like you and appreciate you.” I mean yes it’s supposed to be anonymous, but apparently it’s not-so-anonymous.

Sweet Valley High (The Book Series): Season 3 (Part 7) – The End And All Of Those Fun Extras!

And we’ve finally made it to the end. Here is the very last episode of the season and all of those fun extras including a special look at the Wakefield family in turmoil, the battle for Liz’s heart, Jessica’s love curse and how Sweet Valley High tried to get serious at the end of the season. Don’t worry, it won’t happen again! (I hope.) 😛

The Perfect Size Six (Continued)

Episode 81 – “Friend Against Friend”: Andy Jenkins is a science genius, in a band, a good student, and an all around nice guy. He’s also black. His best friend is Neil Freemount. One day, Andy and Neil go to Andy’s locker and find it full of trash with a note that says, “Go back to Africa.” Neil is outraged and wants to go to the principal but Andy tells him to just leave it be and let him handle it his own way. Neil tells his girlfriend, Penny Ayala, and Elizabeth Wakefield. Both girls can’t believe something like this could happen in Sweet Valley and are upset. Neil’s dad has his good friend Mr. Cashman over. Mr. Cashman is ranting about their new supervisor and how he was only promoted because of that damn affirmative action. He says a bunch of racist things and Neil is horrified to see his father agreeing with him. The next day, Neil, Andy and their girlfriends, Penny and Tracy, are at the Dairi Burger when Tracy has to leave for work. Andy and Neil go outside first and see Charlie Cashman (Mr. Cashman’s son) and a few of his friends leering at them. Charlie tells Andy he is only getting this science award because he’s black. Andy ignores them and they meet the girls at Tracy’s car. All of Tracy’s tires are flat and Charlie and his goons are laughing loudly and then they take off. Tracy is also black. Neil takes Tracy to work so she won’t be late and offers to come back to help Andy with Tracy’s car, but Andy tells him he doesn’t need help from any white person. Andy won’t talk to Neil and the next week things are tense. Mr. Freemount keeps talking about how their boss is picking on Mr. Cashman who is ultimately fired because he keeps showing up to work late. Charlie comes over to Neil’s in an attempt to get away from his father and Neil feels sorry for him and agrees to go out with him for a drive. When they get back Neil feels guilty for hanging out with Charlie because of how he’s treating Andy. The next day at school Charlie tries to get Neil to hang out with him and his friends but Neil says no. Andy sees this and tells Neil he can’t hang around Cashman and still be his friend, they have a fight and aren’t talking again. The next day, Charlie trips Andy in the hall and they get into a big fight. Mr. Collins breaks it up and asks Neil if Charlie is picking on Andy because he is black. Neil doesn’t say anything. That night Neil and Penny see a movie but leave early because Neil is too upset about Andy. When they get to the parking lot, they see a crowd of guys shaking a car. Penny runs inside to call the police while Neil goes over to the crowd and discovers it is Charlie Cashman and his crew assaulting Andy. By the time Neil gets to them Andy is unconscious. Charlie tells Andy to take a swing because Andy has been treating him like crap. Suddenly, Neil is overcome by all the anger he feels towards Andy and hits him before he can stop himself. Then he freaks out, runs to his car and drives away, stranding Penny at the mall. A few minutes later, Neil pulls over and throws up. Neil is avoiding everyone, worried someone will find out what he did. Then his father surprises him with football tickets and during halftime he tells Neil that Neil shouldn’t have hit Andy when he was down, but he did the right thing. Andy deserved it. Neil is horrified his did is a racist and goes to Andy’s house as soon as they get back to Sweet Valley. Neil plans on coming clean, but when he gets there Andy apologizes for acting like such a jerk and wants to be friends again. Neil chickens out. Jessica’s sociology teacher conducts an experiment where all the students with blue and gray eyes are second-class citizens. They’re forced to sit in back and cannot talk or raise their hands and the other students can treat them however they want to. Everyone realizes how horrible it feels to be discriminated against and how easy it is to discriminate. Charlie approaches Neil and tells him that it’s time to teach Andy another lesson and if he doesn’t help, then Charlie will tell the cops it was Neil who beat up Andy. Charlie’s dad has already given Charlie an alibi. Neil finally comes clean to Andy and Penny and both of them storm off. Penny tells Neil he wasn’t who she thought he was and it looks like Neil just lost his best friend and his girlfriend. He drives around and ends up back at Sweet Valley High just in time to see Charlie and his gang walking toward Andy on the football field. Neil runs to join Andy. He tells Andy he is going to stand by him this time. Andy says it doesn’t change anything and Neil says he knows that, but he is going to always stand by Andy from now on. Neil tells Charlie that they’ll have to beat him up too and this makes them think twice about things and they leave. Neil and Andy walk off in opposite directions and it’s unclear if they’ll ever be friends again. Penny takes Neil back though.

Sweet Valley High (The Book Series): Season 4 (Part 6) A Family Divided, Political Scandal And Some Love Schemes

Sweet Valley High (The Book Series): Season 4 (Part 6) A Family Divided, Political Scandal And Some Love Schemes

The following three episodes are full of political scandal and cover-ups, various matchmaking schemes gone horribly wrong and the conclusion to the separation of Mr. and Mrs. Wakefield. Will they get back together or go after someone better… You’ll just have to find out! 😉

The Perfect Size Six (Continued)

Episode 78 – “Who’s To Blame?”: Mr. Wakefield moves out and gets his own apartment downtown. Elizabeth is depressed and thinks her parents’ separation is all her fault. Jessica phone charges are discovered and her allowance is suspended until she takes care of the $300 phone bill. Jessica goes to her dad’s apartment for money and to get him to talk to her mother. Jessica and Steven keep fighting about their parents’ separation and Liz tries to be the peacekeeper, which just makes Steven and Jessica angry at her. Jessica tells Charlie from the teen party line that he either meets her in person or they stop talking. Charlie agrees but when they meet he seems boring and has zero personality even though he is hot. Jessica gives him another try before cutting him loose. Then Jessica finds out that she never met the real Charlie. Charlie had one of his more attractive friends go in his place. Elizabeth keeps forgetting plans with Todd and then decides he is better off without her because now she is jaded. She breaks up with him and refuses to talk about it. Elizabeth starts going out with a lot of different guys because Jessica tells her to play the field. Then Jessica is upset because Elizabeth is playing the field better than she is. Jessica loses it one day and tells Elizabeth that their parents’ separation is all her fault because she gave their mother’s office the number they could be reached in Tahoe. Steven agrees with Jessica. Elizabeth is blowing off her newspaper responsibilities and does badly on a paper, but after her siblings’ accusations she decides everyone would be better off without her. She plans to runaway to Michigan or Texas, but Enid convinces her to crash at Enid’s house instead. She writes her family a letter explaining why she had to leave, but not saying where she is and then leaves Enid’s phone off the hook so no one can call to see if she’s there. Mr. Wakefield comes to the house because he got a letter too, and the family worries all night about where Elizabeth could be. The next morning they go to Enid’s to get Elizabeth. The family finally talks to each other and Jessica and Steven apologize for blaming Elizabeth. Then Jessica decides to make it up to her sister by getting Elizabeth and Todd back together. She gets Todd to meet her and poses as Elizabeth, while Steven takes Elizabeth to their meeting spot so Liz can hear that Todd still loves her. Then Jessica makes an excuse to go to her car, meets Elizabeth and they switch places. Elizabeth is grateful to her sister and happy that she is back together with the love of her life. Jessica finally meets the real Charlie but he ditches her for Amy Sutton, and so does the fake Charlie!
