The Magic Of “Meant To Be” Stories

Every now and then, a writer needs to research something for a project. Maybe an article, maybe a book, but even when it comes to fiction, the more realistic everything is, the more accessible the piece is to the reader. Hopefully readers don’t just read what you write, hopefully they experience it. After a long time away from fiction, I have been getting back to what was my foundation in writing years before, and what I focused on in school… Hello, Fiction!

So at the beginning of this year I had a list of story/book ideas. Some were flashes of inspiration I wrote down. Others were ideas I had been toying with for years, but trying to figure out how to make them work, or in some cases they were already outlined, and while I knew what happened in the story, and how to get it where it needed to go, I have yet to be moved to write it. I have too many ideas, so it is the loudest one, the idea that grabs me by the hair, and screams, “WRITE ME NOW!” that I actually commit to. And while I had a list full of ideas, I didn’t have any screamers through all of January and the first week or so of February.

But then right before Valentine’s Day weekend an idea occurred to me, and I quickly dismissed it. It was absolutely ridiculous I thought. It wasn’t a book idea itself, but rather an angle to an idea I keep trying to work out. It was intriguing, but among those I thought I would epically fail at. It wasn’t fantasy, but it kind of was. It wasn’t creating a new world, yet it played with rewriting history and certain beliefs, and this character was in my mind, but I thought that she was too mature for young readers and not mature enough for adults. Because you know, I can’t help the editor in me sometimes and I look at, “Is this something someone else would want to read? Who?”

Getting My Bake On: Sugar Highs And Cupcakes Of Love

I have a confession to make. I have a bit of a sweet tooth. All right, that’s a bit misleading… I have one heck of a sweet tooth! I mean I love chocolate and candy and cookies and cakes, pastries and, and… well it would be easier to list the sweet things I don’t like, because that list is short, and I’d really have to think about it. I think that’s why I enjoy baking so much. See, I love being in the kitchen and making up recipes – both cooking, and baking. But I’m never fully satisfied when I cook. I mean whenever I make a new dish, and Roy (my husband) raves about it, I’m always thinking, “What could I have done differently?” Because whatever I cook never really measures up to what I wanted to do. I don’t let it get to me, but I think that’s why, even when I create a hit, I am only 90% good with it. But not so much when I bake.

Maybe it’s the sugar high, but when I bake, I might worry about how people will like it (if it is something I have never attempted before) but when I take a bite, it’s pure love. And the thing I love making the most by far, is cupcakes. I’m not sure why I love baking cupcakes above all else, because to be clear about something right now, my cupcakes are not pretty. And the few times I have tried to make cupcakes that look good, have been the few times when it isn’t true love – it’s more some sort of like.

Nebraska: Welcome To 2015, Please Stay Awhile

Today was a day when the fair state of Nebraska (it’s one of the ones in the middle) joined so many other states on the right side of history, and said, “Yes,” to same-sex marriage. Well, not quite. Technically, a federal judge struck down their ban on same-sex unions calling it unconstitutional. Damn straight! Pun intended. 😉

A lot of my friends are celebrating. Why? Oh, did I forget to mention I’m originally from Nebraska? That’s because I don’t claim it. When I went to Los Angeles for graduate school, and moved back for two years, people in Nebraska never guessed I was a native, and this was a compliment. I just told them, I was from L.A. because it wasn’t technically a lie. (When I lived there before graduate school, people always assumed I was from New York. Apparently it wasn’t just my attitude, but the fact that I walk with a purpose. shrug) So, my social media newsfeeds are blowing up with friends, some who still live there and others who don’t, rejoicing. And I might “like” their comments, but I am keeping tight-lipped about the whole thing, because I don’t want to be the rain that pushes away the rainbow. But here is my response:

Dear Nebraska,

Welcome to the year 2015. Please stay awhile, even though I’m quite sure you won’t.

You see the judge who struck down than ban yesterday, first put into effect in 2000, struck down the same ban in 2005, and the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated it a year later. And Nebraska’s Attorney General expected this, and already had the appeal ready to go. I hate seeing history repeat itself, but in Nebraska it seems to be an endless cycle.

Confessions Of A Bookaholic – Guilty Pleasures Edition #67 – Sweet Valley High #61 – Boy Trouble

I’d be lying if I said this book was special, but it is one of only two Sweet Valley High books so far to focus on a racial minority, so that’s something. We’ve already seen Sweet Valley High’s token Asian, now it’s time to focus on the token black girl.

Confessions Of A Bookaholic – Guilty Pleasures Edition #66 – Sweet Valley High Super Star #1 – Lila’s Story

If you only read one Sweet Valley book (up to this point anyway) then this might be the book to read! I didn’t know what to expect, and honestly wasn’t expecting all that much, but this book delivers everything there is to love about Sweet Valley High and then some extra. Scheming, love, melodrama, parent plots, the fabulously rich, criminals, and just desserts are all in this book. I don’t remember feeling so satisfied (EVER) after reading a Sweet Valley High book, as I did with this book. I actually wanted to read it again! 🙂

*I know this is a longer post, but I promise you it’s worth it! 😉
