Nanowrimo… It’s Almost Over And I Am STILL Behind!

So I am checking in for the last time this month regarding NaNoWriMo. For anyone who doesn’t know this is when a bunch of people register online with the same goal in mind: to write a 50,000 word novel in one month. That means you need to average about 1667 words every day without fail, on the same project. For me, a 1667 word count per day commitment is not a problem, the fact that is has to all go towards the same larger project is where I run into issues (I write about 1800 words a day on average, but that includes personal writing and blogs, etc.).

I am not going to reflect on this month of NaNoWriMo and my overall experience yet because that would be premature (oh you know it is coming next month) but twenty days in and I am still behind, and yet still determined to meet 50,000 words before the month is over.

Lost: A Wallet’s Tale

This is the story of a wallet, neglected so that no one knew it was missing for six days, and its week-long journey home.

A Wallet’s Beginnings…

I have never been a wallet person. I don’t have anything against them, but having one just never seemed to be of interest to me. Before I was sixteen, why would I need one? And I didn’t actually get any credit cards until I was 20, and even then I had like three that I used responsibly (you know spend a little and pay off the entire balance before the end of the month – that was me). When I was in college I just thought it was ridiculous to waste money on something to hold your money. (I have always claimed to be frugal.) And if I found something that appealed to me, and it was worth the price in my opinion, I ran into another issue. My pants. Most of my pants have super tiny pockets. They’re big enough to carry my I.D. and maybe one card and that’s it. And an empty wallet, even a super-thin empty wallet just wouldn’t fit. And I don’t carry a purse or bag around, so I have just always gone without.

But my husband was constantly riding me about not having a wallet. He was always saying I was going to lose my I.D. or a card, but the funny thing is when they were loose, I never lost them, not once. And this was always the main point of my rebuttal, followed by, “And if I ever did lose a card or my I.D. at least that’s it. When you keep everything in a wallet, and you lose your wallet, you lose everything.”

New Shows Of Fall 2014: The Runner-Ups And Some Filler

Here are the remaining new shows that are worth talking about (and have aired by October 31). All of them are decent enough, and yet most of them could be so much more than they already are. Here is hoping that these shows find their footings and come back better than ever in 2015!

“The Mysteries Of Laura”

The Mysteries of Laura

My Rating 8 out of 10 Stars

This series follows the life of Laura Diamond, a homicide detective with the New York Police Department (NYPD) who balances her day job as a detective with her off-duty job as a single mother to her rambunctious (understatement) twin sons, while trying to get her soon-to-be-ex husband to sign the divorce papers. It isn’t hard to find him, since he just happens to be her new boss…

The “Almost Best” New Shows Of Fall 2014

These four shows deserve a special shout-out. They may not have made the “best” list but they still rise above other runner-ups and solid new shows. They are the almost best!

“Scorpion”

Scorpion-Wikia_Titlecard_001

My Rating 8.5 out of 10 Stars

Walter O’Brien and a team of outcast geniuses are recruited by Cabe Gallo a federal agent with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to form Scorpion: a team that is the last line of defense against complex and high-tech threats around the globe. The team is led by O’Brien, one of the smartest people in the world with an IQ of 197, and his friends: Sylvester Dodd, a “human calculator” who deals in statistics; Happy Quinn, a “mechanical prodigy”; and Toby Curtis who is a “world-class shrink” (a Harvard-trained enthusiast). Paige Dineen, a former waitress whose interaction with people translates the real world to these geniuses, rounds out the team, and in exchange they translate her mentally gifted son, Ralph, to her.

Awesome Neighbors To The Rescue!

This post could be about a horrible experience, because it certainly started out that way. But what I am going to focus on now that it’s over (somewhat at least) is the good thing that I already knew, but it just reinforced – times ten.

Roy (my husband) and I have a leaky water main line to our house. We needed to get it fixed before the ground froze and we couldn’t wait until next year because our water bill was suddenly five times what it should have been, and we can’t spend $250+ on water we don’t use. Since I really can’t talk on the phone, Roy made tons of calls to potential candidates but few people wanted to do the job, it was too much work for too little money (I didn’t realize $1,000 was chump change) or the people who did want to do it weren’t licensed which made us nervous because this is more than five feet underground with a natural gas line nearby (and closer to the surface) so we weren’t okay taking any chances. Roy finally found a guy who agreed to do the digging, the plumbing and put the dirt back for $850. And he had his own company, with rave reviews in a small community, and he was a licensed Master Plumber. Perfect.

Originally he scheduled it for 8:00am last Tuesday (the 11th). We were worried because there was a major winter storm complete with snow and freezing temperatures that day, so we asked him on Saturday if he could do it before then. We were completely open. He ignored us, and then he didn’t show up until 4:00pm on Tuesday. His diggers came out ahead of him, but they were waiting in their car for him to show up for more than four hours. We might not have loved that he was so late, but as long as it got done we really didn’t care.
